Templars Today on a Spiritual Retreat in Rome

A few years ago, I was seeking contact with the Poor Knights of Christ, those who continue the work of the original Templar knights—men and women who gave their lives for the Catholic faith and to protect the poor and pilgrims, in full communion with the Holy Mother Church.

I reached out to them via Facebook and was warmly welcomed by the brothers and sisters. A particularly meaningful experience was participating in our retreat in Rome, including the long Silent Procession through the streets of the Eternal City on September 12.

Carrying the holy relics in respectful and prayerful silence, I believe we became a sign of the sacred presence in contemporary society. Our silence spoke profoundly to the hearts of all who witnessed it. We seek to be a sign of a living, active Church, in communion with the Holy Father, through the witness of the Knights and Dames of the Temple. At the end of the procession, we were welcomed into the Church of Saint Alphonsus, sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where we celebrated the Holy Eucharist.

On Sunday, September 13, we celebrated the Eucharist at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, presided over by Cardinal Monterisi, concluding this beautiful moment of communion and brotherhood in Rome with a festive lunch. It was a special and unforgettable weekend, not only for me but for all who had the opportunity to participate or witness our silent presence through the streets of Rome—a city blessed by the blood of countless martyrs and the holy apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
